What do they look like?
Paper wasps are 5/8 to 3/4 inch long and brownish with yellow markings. They're slimmer than yellowjackets, with a narrow waist and long legs. Their nests look like an upside-down paper umbrella with the cells open and showing. Look under porch ceilings, the tops of door and window frames, soffits, eaves, attic rafters, deck joists, and railings.
Signs you have them
- Umbrella-shaped paper nests with open cells under an overhang
- Wasps hanging around eaves, porch ceilings, or door frames
- Wasps inside the house in fall or spring
Are they dangerous?
Paper wasps aren't aggressive by nature, but they will sting if the nest is disturbed. Stings are painful and can cause allergic reactions. Because they build over doors, porches, and railings, nests often end up right where people walk. PestWorld advises against removing nests yourself.
When are they active?
Future queens look for shelter each fall, sometimes inside buildings, and come back out in spring to start new nests.
How Wolfe treats them
We treat paper wasp nests directly and remove them where we can reach, then check porch ceilings, eaves, door frames, and deck joists around the house for others. If wasps are getting inside, we'll point out the gaps and screens that need fixing. All of our work comes with a 30-day warranty. If pests come back within 30 days of a treatment, call us and we'll come back out at no extra charge.
How to keep them out
- Caulk gaps around the house.
- Repair torn window and door screens.
- Check shrubs for nests before you trim.
- Keep food covered when you eat outside.
- Skip strong fragrances when you're working outdoors.
Common questions
Are paper wasps aggressive?
Not by nature. They sting when the nest is disturbed, so trouble starts when a nest is over a door or railing people use.
Can I knock the nest down myself?
PestWorld advises against DIY nest removal, since stings are painful and can cause allergic reactions. We can take care of it.
Why do I find wasps inside in the fall?
Future queens look for shelter in autumn, sometimes inside buildings. Sealing gaps and repairing screens helps keep them out.
